Lot 108
1793 S-14 R5- Liberty Cap F15. Sharpness VF35, perhaps even better on the reverse, but covered with uniform fine granularity on all but the highpoints, which are relatively smooth. No verdigris or pits, and the toning is an attractive and slightly glossy medium chocolate brown. The only marks are some very fine and barely visible hairline scratches in the obverse fields plus a single more visible vertical one in the field under the cap. The eye appeal remains decent in spite of the imperfect surfaces and the details are sharp. The edge lettering is bold. EDS, Breen state I. Removed from a SEGS slab graded XF40, "Light Ruffness" (SEGS label included).

No verdigris. The only contact marks worthy of mention are a few thin, old scratches on the neck. Partially glossy medium brown blending to darker chocolate in protected areas. At least half of the date remains visible, the 94 strongest, but most of the legend on the reverse is faint or gone. 1794 S-24 R1 PCGS graded AU58. The "Apple Cheek" variety, so-named because of the high-relief cheek of Ms Liberty. Choice lustrous medium chocolate brown and steel with smooth, nearly flawless surfaces. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal is outstanding in every respect. Just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices from mint state. The only notable mark, and it is barely visible, is a tiny planchet flake near the dentils left of the bottom of the cap. M-LDS, Breen state V, with a die crack from the dentils just right of the 4 up through the bust to the upper neck where it fades out, a lighter crack from the dentils down through the L to the junction of the cap and hair, and several wavy die defects just right of the denominator. The central part of the reverse is clearly bulged outward, but ONE CENT is strong. The strike is sharp and almost perfectly centered on a beautiful planchet. This important example of the "Apple Cheek" variety is graded AU55 Choice and CC#7 in the Noyes census. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#6 honors. Our grade is AU55. The finest example of the variety listed in the census of collections formed by the "Boyz of 1794" is also graded AU55. The obverse of this cent was plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and it comes with an outstanding provenance that can be traced back more than a century. PCGS population 3; 1 in 63.
Estimated Value $15,000-UP.

1794 S-25 R3 VF25. Sharpness EF40 but the obverse is covered with uniform very fine granularity on all but the highpoints, which are nearly smooth. No verdigris and the only marks are some light scratches on the portrait, all blended perfectly into the attractive mostly glossy light to medium chocolate brown toning. The reverse is much nicer, nearly choice, with only minor imperfections. EDS, Breen state I. Graded net VF25 in the Bland/Breen condition census. The obverse is plated in the Tom Morley book on the cents of 1794. This cent comes with an impressive provenance that includes numerous heavyweights of large cent collecting, and the "H" and "D" in HUNDRED on the edge are filled with yellow ink signifying this cent was in the famous collection of Homer K. Downing.

The chips in the field under the cap are prominent and traces of fine die rust are visible on the reverse. A very attractive cent with just a hint of friction on the highest points of the hair. 1794 S-32 R2 F15. Glossy medium brown blending to darker olive brown in protected areas. The surfaces are mostly smooth but traces of microscopic roughness can be found in the protected areas on both sides. The notable marks are a small horizontal nick left of the eye and a spot of shallow carbon right of the Y in LIBERTY. M-LDS, Breen state IV. Unevenly struck, as usual in this die state due to the 45 degree CCW rotation of the dies, with weakness along the right edge of the obverse and the opposing lower right edge of the reverse. Otherwise the devices are well struck. The die crack from the rim through the first S in STATES is strong and it reaches the O in ONE. The cud break over the L in LIBERTY is obvious. Removed from a PCGS slab graded VF20 (label #35561.20/15010255 included, and it shows the Ellsworth provenance).

Both of the "chips" in the field under the cap are clear, the inner one strongest as always. Struck with the reverse rotated 50 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The date and legends are complete and at least half of the tiny stars are visible among the dentils on the reverse. 1794 S-51 R4 F15. Sharpness near VF35 but covered with fine roughness, especially on the reverse where there are areas of shallow pitting and microscopic specks of verdigris. The only other mark is a shallow planchet void on the rim over UNI. The obverse is an attractive glossy chocolate and olive brown with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. The reverse is a less attractive but still rather glossy reddish chocolate and darker steel. The strike is uneven, particularly on the reverse where there is obvious weakness along the right edge that severely weakens AMERICA. Overall the grade for the obverse would be an attractive VF30 but the reverse would rate a net VG8 at best. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks on the obverse.

The date and legends are complete and strong. LDS, Breen state III. The die crack from the dentils to the hair under the cap is clear.
